PATHANAMTHITTA, NOV. 24. Elaborate arrangements have been made for the annual Karthika Pongala festival at the Chakkulathukavu Bhagavathy Temple in Neerettupuram, near Thiruvalla, on Friday. Devotees from different parts of the State as well as the bordering districts of Tamil Nadu have been camping at the temple premises to offer the Pongala Nivedyam to the presiding deity on Friday. The Health Department has opened temporary health-care units at Neerettupuram for the Pongala.
Bus services
The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation has started special services to Chakkulathukavu from its depots in Thiruvananthapuram, Kottarakkara, Punalur, Ernakulam, Kottayam, Thiruvalla, Kollam, Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta, Neyyatinkara and Nedumangad. Arrangements for parking of vehicles on the Pongala day have been made at the Kavumbhagom Devaswom Board school grounds and the Public Stadium in Thiruvalla, the police station grounds, KSEB premises, the St. Aloseus College grounds and the Holy Angel's School grounds in Edathua. The KSRTC has opened a temporary bus station at the panchayat grounds in Thalavady.
Pongala ritual
The BJP State president, P.S.Sreedharan Pillai, will formally inaugurate the festival at 9 a.m. on Friday. The temple chief priest, Radhakrishnan Namboodiri, will transfer the sacred fire from the sanctum sanctorum to the specially prepared fire place in the temple precincts, marking the beginning of the Pongala Naivedyam process. Devotees would line up along the Changanacherry-Chengannur stretch of the MC Road, Thiruvalla-Edathua Road and along the Mannar-Mavelikkara Road to offer Pongala on Friday morning. The Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, will inaugurate the cultural meet in connection with the festival at 5 p.m. The Kuttanad MLA, K.C.Joseph, will preside over the meeting.
Karthika Sthambom
The Karthika Sthambom has been prepared in the temple precincts. It will be lit during the Deeparadhana at the temple on Friday evening. The ritual is believed to eliminate evil spirits from the locality. The managing director of the Asianet, K.Madhavan, will light the Sthambhom at 6 p.m. Entry to the temple will be restricted only to women on Thursday and Friday in view of the Pongala festival.
