THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, NOV. 24. The employees of the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation would soon be given one instalment of Dearness Allowance and the drivers, a new set of uniform, the Transport Minister, N. Sakthan, has said. Inaugurating the two-day 34th State conference of the Kerala State Transport Drivers Union here today, Mr. Sakhtan said one instalment of DA entails an additional financial burden of Rs. 10.20 crores on the corporation and the uniform sets, Rs. 1.13 crores. The daily wages of the empanelled drivers would be hiked from Rs. 110 to Rs. 120. The KSRTC's revenue had gone up during the last two-and-a-half months, Mr. Sakhtan said. The increase in the earnings per kilometre was the main reason for this and not the fare hike. Compared to the Rs. 1.78 crores revenue generated in October 2003, the revenue was Rs. 2.03 crores in October this year. At the function, the Minister for Education, E. T. Mohammed Basheer gave away gold medals to the SSLC toppers among the children of the KSRTC drivers.
Delegates session
The Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, who inaugurated the delegates session in the afternoon said that he was aware of the KSRTC's problems and offered to extend maximum assistance within the Government's financial capability. He disclosed that the largest number of complaints he received during his mass contact programme in 11 districts were about the non-payment of KSRTC retirement benefits and the compensations awarded by the Motor Accidents Claims Tribunals.
