Forum to regulate prices of drugs

By Our Staff Reporter

VIJAYAWADA, NOV. 24. The All India Drugs Control Officers' Confederation has embarked on a move to regulate the prices of drugs.

Stating this at a press conference here on Wednesday, the secretary-general of the confederation, R. Uday Bhaskar, said the move was necessitated as some pharmacists were found to be charging excess.

The eighth annual convention of the confederation, held in New Delhi on October 10 and 11, focused on the ways and means to make the Drug Regulatory Authority more people-friendly.

While the issue of drug pricing and the role of the regulatory officers in health care was discussed threadbare, it was also decided to compress the disparity between the ex-factory and the MRP prices of drugs. "Since the Government has failed to address the issue of bridging the wide gap, the confederation has set on the job of collecting data and the exercise is likely to be completed shortly," he said.

Government criticised

The Andhra Pradesh Drug Trade Association leader, K.P.Ranga Rao, pointed out that there were a total 35,000 drug outlets, both wholesale and retail, across the State.

He criticised the Government for its `failure' to initiate action against those violating norms stipulated for implementation of the Drug Control Price Act.

Later, he was felicitated by members of the Krishna District Chemists and Druggists Association (KDCDA), at a function organised here in connection with the 43rd national pharmacy celebrations.

The celebrations were jointly organised by members of the KDCDA and Indian Pharmaceutical Association. The association leader, V. Venkata Rao, and others were present.
