VIJAYAWADA, NOV. 24. The Andhra Pradesh Ryotu Sangham president, Kolli Nageswara Rao, has asked the Central Government plug the loopholes in the existing crop insurance policy, as it was the only solution to prevent farmers from committing suicide. Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, Mr. Rao lamented that while the farmers invested huge amounts on their crops during the previous year, they could recover less than 40 per cent of the investment through crop insurance. In view of this, the agricultural Insurance Corporation should take steps to repay the entire crop loans obtained by the farmers for which changes were required in the existing policy.
Farmers' investments
Giving details of investments made by the farmers, Mr. Rao said over 15 lakh farmers who obtained loans from societies and banks paid a premium of Rs. 49 crores to the insurance companies during 2003-04, in addition to the 50 per cent of the total premium amount remitted by the Government. However, only 3.82 lakh farmers could get the crop insurance of Rs. 202 crores and the payment was much less than the investments made by the farmers. In the rabi season that followed, 2.35 lakhs farmers paid a premium of Rs. 5.8 crores, but only 47,000 could secure the insurance to the tune of Rs. 14.5 crores. Though the matter was represented to the Central Government, no action had been initiated so far, he said charging the Government with being indifferent to the problems faced by farmers.
