MANGALORE, NOV. 24. The Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat will implement the "Full Hygiene Programme" in 240 villages at a cost of Rs. 6.37 crores, its President, Somanath, has said. Chairing a meeting in this regard here today, Mr. Somanath said the zilla panchayat would construct 42,000 toilets in the district. There was some flexibility regarding funding as the estimate could be exceeded by 25 per cent, he added. The zilla panchayat had constructed 3,278 toilets in 55 villages, he said. It had made arrangements to construct toilets for women in various villages.
Schools
Mr. Somanath said the zilla panchayat was keen on ensuring hygiene and cleanliness in schools. As many as 442 toilets would be built in 350 high schools. The zilla panchayat had sanctioned 440 toilets for anganwadis with their own buildings, he added. He said the Government had earmarked Rs. 5,000 for each toilet. While the people were expected to contribute Rs. 500, the Women and Child Welfare Department would release a matching grant for each toilet, he added.
