New ambulance depot at Pumpwell Circle

By Our Staff Correspondent

MANGALORE, NOV. 24. The Rotary Club of Mangalore will hand over "Project Suraksha," the ambulance depot at Mahaveer Junction (Pumpwell Circle) to the District Police on Thursday, a press release said. The depot was constructed at a cost of Rs. 3.5 lakhs by the club at the request of the Dakshina Kannada Police, the release said.

The first half hour after any accident is crucial as the victim has to be shifted to a hospital immediately.

The new depot will help reduce the time taken for ambulances to reach accident spots on NH 17 and NH 48 by more than 20 minutes, the release said.

The project was taken up after the former Superintendent of Police, Seemanth Kumar Singh, suggested that a depot for ambulances be built in that area.

It was taken up as the centennial project of the Rotary Club. The depot has a reception area, rest room, and washroom for personnel posted there.

It is at the entry point of Mangalore city, where six roads meet. The depot can also be used as a police outpost and there is a help desk for travellers.

The Dakshina Kannada Police have agreed to post personnel trained in first aid at the facility for quick accident relief, the release added.

The Rotary Governor, A.S.N Hebbar, will be the chief guest at the handing over ceremony. The depot will be handed over to Superintendent of Police, Soumendu Mukherjee.
