Bajpe bandh call evokes partial response

By Our Staff Correspondent

Policemen maintaining vigil on Bajpe Main Road on Wednesday following a bandh call given by the BJP to protest against the assault on its party worker, Vijaya Suvarna, at a gram panchayat meeting.

MANGALORE, NOV. 24. The call given by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Suratkal Assembly Constituency unit to observe a bandh in Bajpe today against the alleged manhandling of Vijaya Suvarna, a member of the Bajpe Gram Panchayat, at the general meeting of the body on Tuesday, evoked a partial response. The owners of most shops in Bajpe closed their establishments when the BJP organised a protest meeting.

Pratap Simha Nayak, president of the BJP district unit, and senior party leader Shankar Bhat addressed the protesters near the Bajpe bus station ground. Mr. Bhat told The Hindu that the owners of most shops and business establishments along the Bajpe main road responded to the bandh call.

Demands

He said the BJP would demand the arrest of the zilla panchayat member, Rolphy D'Costa, and the President and Secretary of the gram panchayat, Mahabala Rai and Mohammed Sharief, respectively, for their alleged role in the assault on Ms. Suvarna.

Mr. Bhat said the BJP had requested that criminal cases be booked against Mr. D'Costa and Mr. Sharief and disciplinary action initiated against Mr. Rai, a government official, for allegedly abetting violence.

Mr. Nayak said the Suratkal MLA, Krishna Palemar, and the Udupi MP, Manorama Madhwaraj, would meet senior police officials on Thursday and demand action against those responsible for the assault on Ms. Suvarna. He demanded an inquiry into the alleged irregularities in the implementation of the Rajiv Gandhi Drinking Water Scheme in the Bajpe Gram Panchayat limits.

The Superintendent of Police, Soumendhu Mukherjee, said the bandh had not disrupted normal life in Bajpe.
