Susheela died on the spot and her husband is still in hospital. But their two-month-old baby boy is safe, thanks to his mother's presence of mind. Kausalya, an eye-witness, said she saw the bus running amok and knocking down the four vehicles. "When the bus hit the motorcycle, the woman's husband fell on the road with a thud. The woman (the victim, Susheela) who was seated at the back, flung her infant into the traffic island," she said. A housemaid, Kausalya said the infant boy was draped in soft cloth and fell on a cushion of grass. "She did her bit to save the boy and she succeeded," Kausalya said, choked with emotion like other onlookers at the Stanley Hospital. Relatives of the victim who gathered at the hospital said the boy was yet to be named.
