Temperature

MADURAI, NOV.24. The city today registered a maximum temperature of 29.8 degrees Celsius and a minimum temperature of 23.9 degrees Celsius.

Water level

The level in the Periyar dam today stood at 130.5 feet with an inflow of 701 cusecs and a discharge of 900 cusecs. The level in the Vaigai dam was 67.72 feet with an inflow of 1587 cusecs and a discharge of 2429 cusecs. The combined Periyar credit stood at 7702 mcft.

Case against AIADMK councillor

The City Crime Branch police have registered a case against the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam councillor, Meena Sivaraman, and her husband, Sivaraman, on charges of cheating more than five youth here, taking Rs.7 lakhs from them after promising government jobs. According to the police, the accused assured the complainants of jobs in the Meenakshi Sundareswar Temple and the railways. They neither got them the jobs nor returned the money. No arrests have been made yet.

Police thanked

The Tamil Nadu Textile Merchants' Association has thanked the Commissioner of Police, Vijay Kumar, for having kept pavements free from vendors, facilitating a free movement of the people during the Deepavali festival.

In a statement, the association president, C.A. Abdul Salam, said the police evicted platform/roadside vendors, which helped shoppers walk freely. No untoward incident such as thefts, chain-snatching etc was reported during the shopping season. The police vigil on antisocial elements and patrolling were good, he said.

A similar security arrangement should be implemented during all festive occasions, he added.

Power cut

There will be no power supply in the following areas between 9.00 a.m. and 4.00 p.m. on November 27, owing to maintenance work to be carried out at the Samayanallur sub-station: Samayanallur, Thenur, Tiruvedagam, Sholavandan, Melakkal, Thuvariman, Nagari, Keezhamathur, Paravai, Kodimangalam, Adhalai, Podhumbu, Alanganallur, T. Mettupatti, Oorseri, Azhagapuri and Vavidamarudur.

Free programme

The Aspire Learning Company is introducing a free programme, `Toppers League', targeting higher secondary schools that aim at perfecting the skills of science students for the final sprint.
