BANGALORE, NOV. 24. With a big turnout likely for the protest rally to be taken out by the leading lights of Kannada film industry and pro-Kannada organisations, under the leadership of thespian Rajkumar on Thursday, the city police are on their toes. The rally is likely start around 10 a.m. The rally, billed to be a first step towards organising a State-wide protest on the lines of Gokak agitation, to demand a seven-week moratorium on the release of new non-Kannada films in the State, is expected to attract a large crowd from throughout the State. While the organisers of the rally have sought permission from the police to stage a demonstration near the Kengal Hanumanthaiya statue in front of the Vidhana Soudha, the city police have been persuading them to shift the venue to Chiklabagh, Jakkarayanakere and the Government Arts College. S. Mariswamy, Commissioner of Police, said although police could not allow the protesters near the statue (in view of the obvious threat to the security of the Vidhana Soudha), a decision on this would be taken based on the developing situation. "A symbolic protest may be allowed," he said. .
Shows as usual
Meanwhile, film exhibitors in the city said they would continue to screen the films as usual. Prakash and V. Venu, owners of Cauvery and Vaibhav cinemas respectively, which are screening the Yash Chopra film, Veer-Zaara, said there would be normal film screening on Thursday.
The police have tightened security around all cinemas screening Veer-Zaara, release of which is the immediate provocation for the rally.
