Sree Ramakrishna Sevasramam anniversary begins

KOCHI, NOV. 24. The Assembly Speaker, Therambil Ramakrishnan, has called upon the public to shun fundamentalism and instead uphold the values of spirituality.

He was inaugurating the 22nd anniversary celebrations of Sree Ramakrishna Sevasramam, Kaloor on Wednesday. Mr. Ramakrishnan said that vigil was needed against the misuse of religion.

The Ombudsman for Local Bodies K.P. Radhakrishna Menon, who presided over the function, said that centres such as the Sevasramam had a key role in society as they provided solace to the lonely and helpless persons.

It also provided a venue for the retired and aged people to work and interact with one another. Swami Purandarananda, president of the Vivekananda Yogasana Kendram, offered felicitations. Vailoppilly Balakrishna Menon and Muraleedharan were among those who spoke on the occasion. Competitions for school students in singing Vande Mataram, Yoga, chess, painting, patriotic song and skit were held on Wednesday as part of the programmes. `Vayojana Sangamam', meeting of elderly persons, was also held. The programmes will continue till Sunday. An elocution contest on the theme, `The Chicago speech of Swami Vivekananda,' will be held on Thursday.

The 150th birthday of Sarada Devi will be celebrated on Sunday. The function will be addresses by the former Kerala High Court Judge D. Sreedevi, Lakshmi Kumari and Suvarna Nalappat.
