THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, NOV. 24 . The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) Vigilance wing has detected power theft amounting to Rs. 10 lakhs on various premises, including the house of a former MLA, in Kollam district. In a surprise check on November 18, the KSEB said it found the electronic meter at the house of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) leader, Yonous Kunju, in Kollam to have been tampered and Rs 1.8 lakh worth of power stolen over a period of several months. The KSEB has registered a case of power theft against Mr. Kunju under the relevant sections of the Indian Electricity Act, 2003. The Board has also cut power to the former MLA's house. The other establishments accused by the KSEB of stealing power in Kollam include a petrol pump at Ayathil, V.P. Foods at Kottiyam and Al-Ameen Restaurant at Kundara. Officials said the power theft at these three establishments amounted to nearly Rs. 8 lakhs. In the past seven months, the KSEB Vigilance has detected 81 instances of power theft in Kollam and Thiruvananthapurm district that has cost the board an estimated Rs. 1.53 crores.
