THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, NOV. 24 . The district police have launched a hunt for `Motta' Ani and his brother-in-law, Soju, in connection with the murder of Punnackal Santhosh alias `Jet' Santhosh at Vilapilasala on Tuesday night. Ani heads a criminal gang involved in money-lending and spirit smuggling operations in the city, the police said. A resident of Kalady Bund colony, the murder suspect is also accused in 12 cases, including the murder of one Vibhu at Nemom in 2001. An armed gang travelling in a van had kidnapped Santosh from a barbershop at Thaliyil, near Karamana, at 5 p.m. on Tuesday. According to the police, Santhosh was taken by the gang to Alathara `Four Cents' colony at Vilapilsala at around 7.30 p.m. Some women of the colony had reported hearing a man crying out in pain. The assailants later took Santhosh to Kurishumuttom cemetery near the colony and severed his right hand and leg. Two of the gang members then threatened an autorickshaw driver at sword point and asked him to take the mortally wounded Santhosh to a hospital. The driver carried Santhosh in his vehicle for some distance and informed the police. The police later recovered the severed limbs of Santhosh from the cemetery. Till November 4, Ani had been in judicial remand after he was arrested by the police on the charge of assaulting Radhakrishnan, a "rival" moneylender in Manacaud. Santosh, who was once associated with Ani's gang, had later become close to Radhakrishnan. Ani also resented Santhosh's association with the family of his brother, Sura, an autorickshaw driver.
