Manmohan to lay foundation for airport terminal

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, NOV. 24. The Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, will lay the foundation stone for the 20,000 sq. ft. modern terminal building being constructed on the Chakka side for the State's premier international airport here in the first week of January.

This was announced by the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, at a meeting of the Thiruvananthapruam Airport Development Society held at the Secretariat here today.

The officials of the Airports Authority of India (AAI), who arrived from New Delhi, made a video presentation of the proposed new terminal at the meeting.

The terminal building has been designed after floating international tenders.

The new terminal will have facilities to handle the passengers of two Airbus and one Boeing aircraft at a time.

The Government had already handed over 27.56 acres needed in the first phase for the airport development and construction of terminal on the Chakka side. The AAI was insisting on handing over the land for taking up the construction of the terminal.

Land acquisition

The Managing Director of the Airport Development Society informed the meeting that steps had begun to acquire 120 acres needed for the terminal project in the second phase.

The survey for acquiring the land had commenced, he said.

At present, 4.2 lakh passengers are using the international airport in the capital.

The AAI estimates that the number of passengers using the airport will go up to 11. 8 lakhs in the coming years with Kerala emerging as a leading tourist destination in the World.

Court cases

The acquisition of 27 acres for the terminal commenced in 1996 and was entangled in court cases.

The Union Civil Aviation Minister, Sharad Yadav, had laid the foundation stone for the Rs. 98-crore modern terminal building on June 11, 2000.
