Weather

The maximum temperature recorded at the Gannavaram Airport on Wednesday was 30.4 degrees Celsius and the minimum 18.3 degrees Celsius. Relative humidity, which was 88 per cent, slipped to 69 per cent.

Commodity prices

The following were the rates (in rupees per kg) of various commodities on Wednesday at the city's wholesale market: groundnut oil-53.50, palmolein oil-41.75, sunflower oil-52.50, tamarind (flower variety)--33 to 39, tamarind (karipuli variety)--48 to 54, chillis-14 to 28, rice (2716)--12, rice (superfine)--13 to 14, rice (Sona Masuri)--5 to 16, black gram --22, red gram 23.50 to 30.

Congress leader

mourned

The Vijayawada MP, L.Rajgopal and the former Mayor, Jandhyala Shankar, have condoled the death of the veteran Congress leader, C. Veeraswamy alias Ambulu, who died on Wednesday at Hyderabad.

In separate condolence messages, they said that in the death of Ambulu, the Congress party had lost a towering leader who worked tirelessly for the uplift of the poor and downtrodden without hankering for any party or Government post.

Selected for

championship

K.Himabindu, a student of the city's St. Joseph's High School for Girls, Gunadala, has been selected to play in the national volleyball championship to be held at New Delhi from December 27. Himabindu had recently emerged as the top player at the State-level volleyball tournament held recently at Ibrahimpatnam in Ranga Reddy district, according to a school press release here on Wednesday.

Office-bearers

The following members have been unanimously elected directors of the Krishna District Lorry Owners Mutually Aided Co-op Stores Limited:

K.Channakeswara Rao, Y. Raja Rao, C. Vazir, N. Sataynarayana and R. Prem Chand.

Mr. Channakeswara Rao was also elected chairperson of the society, while Mr. Venkateswara Rao and Mr. Vazir have been chosen as vice chairperson and secretary, respectively, according to the society's election officer, N. Subba Rao.
