This Day That Age
For once The Times, Daily Mirror, Daily Herald and Daily Worker are all on the same side: they are one in denouncing the British Premier, Sir Winston Churchill, for his revelation the other day at his birthday celebration that he was prepared in 1945 to rearm the Nazis to fight the Soviet Union. Only in the Conservative press is there an embarrassed silence and Conservative MPs are saying nothing, but anger is mounting among the Labourites and even Liberals admit that the Prime Minister's disclosure was untimely and imprudent. The Times starts off its leading article with the exasperated question, "What on earth made him say it?" and then goes on to declare that when everything else the Prime Minister said on November 23 would have been forgotten, what would remain in the mind would be the reference to his willingness to give the guns back to the Nazis in 1945. "The remark can be looked at in every way and be put to every kind of test, and in the end, it is impossible to see what purpose or good it can serve at this time." The main reason why Sir Winston is being criticised is that, at a time when improvement in East-West relations is being sought, and West German rearmament is being promoted on what it is hoped will be a democratic basis, his statement is bound to rekindle Russian distrust and strengthen the still active and vigorous Nazi elements in West Germany.
