This Day That Age
Leaders of Japan's ruling Liberal Party decided in Tokyo on November 25 to advise the Prime Minister, Mr. Shigeru Yoshida, to resign. Suggested as Mr. Yoshida's successor is the Deputy Premier, Mr. Taketora Ogata. The Prime Minister's position has been in doubt since November 22 - when 35 Liberals walked out to join the newly-formed Democratic Party, which claims 124 members in the Diet (Lower House of Parliament) to the Liberal Party's 186. When the crisis blew up Mr. Yoshida asked party leaders if he should resign. They met three times before reaching a unanimous decision. Mr. Yoshida had refused to accept a subpoena from a Parliamentary Committee investigating a shipping subsidies scandal. He sent a letter saying he was too tired to give evidence.
