KOCHI, NOV. 25. While Indian Deep Sengupta pushed the top-seeded Ferenc Berkes deeper into the abyss of despair, a young Chinese and a small Malaysian celebrated memorable landmarks at the World junior chess championship at the Casino Hotel here on Thursday.

Sengupta, a former World under-12 champion, pulled off a fighting 43-move victory over Hungarian Berkes with white and in the girls' section, sixth-seeded Pune youngster Eesha Karavade upset Romanian Alina Motoc who is perched one rung above her.

And despite P. Harikrishna holding on to his lead, the Indians had a mixed day at the championships with Koneru Humpy, N.Vinuthna and Saheli Nath all losing their games.

China's junior national champion Zhao Jun, who shifted from Chinese chess to the Western version a few years ago, completed the formalities for this Grandmaster title with a 35-move draw in the Queen's Indian Defence against Russian GM Alekseev Evgeny Vladimirovich.

The day belonged to Sengupta. His early f3 against the Sicilian resulted in the game heading for a sharp battle with the top-seeded Berkes.
