SHIMOGA, NOV. 25. The well-known psychiatrist and recipient of the B.C. Roy Award, K.A. Ashok Pai, has been elected president of the `World Kannada Culture Conference' to be held in Abu Dhabi on December 17. The meet is being held under the joint auspices of the UAE Federation of Karnataka Associations and `Hridaya Vahini,' a Kannada daily from Mangalore. Dr. Pai has produced award-winning Kannada films and written books on mental health in Kannada. He has also contributed articles to newspapers and magazines. Dr. Pai is the managing trustee of Manasa Foundation for Mental Health, which conducts diploma and postgraduate courses in mental health. The president of the Karnataka Sangha at Abu Dhabi, Sarvottam Shetty, is the chairman of the reception committee of the conference. The Deputy Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah, will inaugurate the conference in which non-resident Kannadigas from the United States, the United Kingdom, Bahrain, and Singapore and Kannada activists from Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Delhi, and Kasaragod will participate. A 50-member troupe of artistes and writers will leave for Dubai on December 15. There will be separate sessions on poetry, science, media, and folklore at the conference in which 22 prominent Kannadigas in various fields such as literature, service, medicine, and technology will be honoured with the title `Vishwa Manyaru-04.'
