ERODE, NOV. 25. In Erode, 85.65 per cent of the tuberculosis-affected patients were cured as medicines were provided on time, the Collector, D. Karthikeyan, said. Inaugurating the sale of TB seal today at a function organised by the Tamil Nadu TB Association and Erode TB Society, he said that for the past 21 years, Erode had achieved the target of TB seal sales. This amount was being utilised for providing medicines to the affected persons. The Collector urged the private doctors to cooperate with the TB Society in detecting and treating TB patients. Of the total TB patients, only 52 per cent were visiting Government hospitals for treatment, remaining 48 per cent preferred private doctors. The latter could give details of the patients to the TB Society for providing continuous treatment to them. Under the Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme, six TB units were started in Erode, Chennimalai, Athani, Punjai Puliampatty, Sivagiri and Vellakoil in 2001. Thirty Microscopy Centres were also started for testing the sputum. The Additional Director of Health Services, Perumal, said 1.40 crore persons in Tamil Nadu were examined for TB and provided medicines. The World Health Organisation Advisor, K.V. Rao, Erode IMA president, K.M. Abul Hasan, Perundurai Medical College Dean, K.V. Prasad, Medical Superintendent of Erode Government Headquarters Hospital, K.K.A. Usain Ali, Deputy Directors of TB, A. Rajasekaran of Erode and Dr Arivoli of Coimbatore, spoke.
