Infrastructure sector clocks 4.6 p.c. growth

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, NOV. 25. The infrastructure sector continued to grow at a moderate rate of 4.6 per cent in October, bringing the overall growth in the first seven months of the current fiscal to 5.9 per cent. Growth in these six core industries — crude oil, petroleum refining products, coal, electricity, cement and finished steel — thus continues to rise at a slightly higher rate than last year. The comparative data show the infrastructure sector grew by 4.2 per cent in October 2003 and 5.9 per cent during April-October 2003-4.

According to official data released here today by the Commerce and Industry Ministry, negative growth in the crude oil sector appears to have dragged down the overall index as other sectors have recorded positive increases.

The coal sector grew by 11.8 per cent, cement by 13.6 per cent, petroleum refinery products by 6.3 per cent, electricity by 3.8 per cent and finished steel by 1.9 per cent.

The high growth in the coal sector, however, is on a low base as it recorded negative growth of 1.4 per cent last year in the same month. Cement output, in contrast, exceeded the 6.8 per cent of last year to reach 13.6 per cent this year.
