Three anganwadi centres opened

PONDICHERRY, NOV. 25. The Pondicherry Local Administration Minister, A. Elumalai, has said that the Government was committed to improving the lot of the rural poor.

Opening three anganwadi centres constructed by the Mannadipet panchayat in K. Andiarpalayam, Vinayakampet and Tiruvandarkoil in Thirubuvanai (Assembly constituency today, Mr. Elumalai said that each centre would provide health care and nutritious food to 80 children.

Roads were being laid on priority basis in villages in Pondicherry, and drinking water and other basic amenities were being provided. The Government had alsoalmost fully utilised the money earmarked for Pondicherry by the Planning Commission.

Previous Governments were in the habit of surrendering a good chunk of the outlay, because they did not sufficient welfare plans to implement. But the Rangasamy Government had spent 99.9 per cent of the total plan outlay in 2003-2004 on developmental projects and set a record.

The special housing scheme started in the name of Perunthalaivar Kamarajar was extending a subsidy of Rs. 40,000 to every poor family to help them to replace their huts with concrete structures.Twenty kg rice was distributed free of cost to the families living below poverty line.
