Cuddalore
By Our Special Correspondent
CUDDALORE, NOV. 25. The police strength in the government hospital here has been increased to provide security to patients, doctors and hospital property. At the request of the Resident Medical Officer, S. Narayanaswamy, the Superintendent of Police, K. Premkumar, has increased the number of police personnel at the hospital. Mr. Narayanaswamy told The Hindu that earlier there were only two constables posted at the hospital, but now their strength had gone up to six (two Head Constables and two constables). Asked about the reason for seeking increased protection, Dr. Narayanaswamy said it was unfortunate that many anti-social elements, masquerading as patients, came to the hospital and indulged in petty crimes. They used to loiter near the children's and women's wards, and steal silver anklets and even "mangal sutras."
Theft attempts
He said since several accident and crime cases were being reported to the hospital daily, the case sheets had become important medico-legal documents. However, unscrupulous elements had attempted to lift these papers, and hence, it was imperative to provide security to the victims and the case sheets. Dr Narayanaswamy said it inebriated patients sometimes abused the doctors. The residents of Vilvanagar colony, near the hospital, were regularly using the bathrooms and toilets in the hospital, thus causing a nuisance. Outsiders were utilising the parking lots of the hospital, and several cases of vehicle thefts had been reported. Hospital linen too was stolen from the dhobi ghat. Above all, unfettered movement of outsiders in the hospital might also have an adverse impact on the convict ward, he said. A police outpost with mike facility has been set up on the hospital premises. The facility would help the police immediately alert their counterparts elsewhere and in Pondicherry to trace hit-and-run vehicles, he said.
