KOCHI, NOV. 25. Institutions like the College of Fisheries can create awareness about conserving national wealth, K.T. Thomas, former judge of the Supreme Court, has said. He was speaking after inaugurating the Silver Jubilee celebrations of the College of Fisheries, Panangad, and a national workshop on `Fish for all through quality fisheries education'. The Director of the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute, Mohan Joseph Modayil, presided over the function. The Dean of the College of Fisheries, D.D. Nambudiri, welcomed the audience and the assistant professor B. Manojkumar proposed vote of thanks. M.C. Nandeesha of the College of Fisheries, Tripura, gave an overview of the national workshop. The Director of Research, Kerala Agricultural University, C.K. Peethambaran, also spoke. Technical papers related to fisheries and fisheries education will be presented at the seminar that will start at 9.30 a.m. on Friday.
Fisheries education
The Minister for Agriculture, K.R. Gouri, will inaugurate a policy-level dialogue session on fisheries education on Saturday at 10 a.m. Awards and certificates will be distributed on this occasion. Earlier in the day, the MLA T.N. Prathapan inaugurated a meeting of fishermen. A scientific approach incorporating the experience and information available with traditional fishermen is required in fisheries sector, he said. An exhibition of traditional fishing gears, organised in connection with the jubilee celebrations, was inaugurated by the chairperson of Matsyafed, Mercykuttyamma. The Director of Fisheries Station, Puthuvype, K.S. Purushan, the chief executive of the Agency for Development of Aquaculture, Kerala, A.K. Surendran, and Dr. Namboodiri spoke.
