Six injured in suspected ULFA attack

By Sushanta Talukdar

GUWAHATI, NOV. 25. Six persons were injured when suspected United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) militants today attacked with grenades a security vehicle in Dibrugarh town in upper Assam.

The Assam Home Commissioner and secretary, B. M. Mazumdar, told The Hindu that the militants also carried out another grenade attack on the Dhakuakahana police station in Lakhimpur district, in which no one was hurt.

Earlier in the day, the Assam Chief Minister, Tarun Gogoi, said that the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh's message to the rebel group was clear.

The Centre was ready to talk if the ULFA shunned violence and came forward without any condition. Mr. Gogoi echoed Dr. Singh's statement that "sovereignty" is non-negotiable.

The ULFA said that it was ready for talks if the issue of "Assam's sovereignty" was on the agenda.

During Dr. Singh's visit to the State, he had ruled out any talk on the issue of "sovereignty" and said that Assam was an integral part of India.

The North East Students' Organisation (NESO), the apex body of the Northeast students' organisations, today said that it would take the issues of the withdrawal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958, the Illegal Migrants (Determination by Tribunals) Act and the issue of illegal migration to the region to the floor of the United Nations.
