ZP members object to tenders quoting `absurd' prices

By Our Staff Correspondent

CHITRADURGA, NOV. 25. The issue of "absurd" prices quoted for the supply of groceries and stationery to the hostels in the district was discussed at the general body meeting of the Chitradurga Zilla Panchayat on Thursday.

Hanumakka, member, questioned the rationale behind accepting tenders that quoted "absurd" prices. "How can anyone supply red chilly at Rs.1 a kg, toilet soaps for Rs. 5, and cardamom for Rs. 10 a kg," she asked.

Other members, including Rajanaik, Shanmukhappa, C.M. Ashok, Jayaprakash, Dyamanna, and Shanthanna, expressed suspicion over the manner in which tenders were allotted.

The chief executive officer, Narayanaswamy, expressed helplessness over the matter and promised to rectify the anomalies after consulting senior officials. "As per the rules, we have to allot the tender to the bidder who quotes the least," he said.

The meeting urged the Government to sanction Rs. 4 crores to tackle the drinking water crisis in the district. Presiding over the meeting, Girija Pujari Ningappa, president, urged the legislators and members to pressure the Government to release funds for drought management and drinking water.

N.Y. Gopalakrishna, Molakalmuru MLA, asked the district-level officers to visit the villages facing drinking water problems and try to resolve the crisis at the earliest. He also advised the officers to get in touch with the rural people through "Janasamparka sabhe." A few members took exception to not being invited to the meeting on the implementation of the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan by the Depratment of Public Instruction.
