Thanjavur Nov.25. The State Government had allotted Rs. 20 crores for improving roads in Thanjavur district, the Collector, J. Radhakrishnan, said. Speaking at a `manuneedhi' camp at Ambalapattu in Orathanadu taluk, he said that women self-help groups in Thanjavur district have savings to the tune of Rs.30 crores. He advised the farmers to choose paddy varieties that could withstand flood and rain. Paddy was raised on 1.31 lakh hectares in Thanjavur district but crops raised on 10,000 hectares alone were affected. So, farmers could get good harvest since the rain-affected crop was marginal. He advised women to use sanitary complexes and help in bring about total sanitation in villages. Drinking water should be examined every day and pure chlorinated water should be used for drinking purpose. The Collector distributed benefits to the tune of Rs.11 lakhs to 197 beneficiaries. Shanthi, Orathanadu Panchayat Union chairperson, P. Rajendran, Project Officer, District Rural Development Agency, Sampath Kumar, Project Officer, Mahalir Thittam, Ganesan, Deputy Director of Health, Ramadoss, Deputy Director of Agriculture, participated in the meeting.
