TIRUPATI, NOV. 25. The thrift habit of women has come in for praise from the State Governor, Sushil Kumar Shinde. Speaking after distributing assets to members of thrift groups at a function organised by Tirupati rural Velugu Mandala Samakhya here on Thursday, Mr. Shinde lauded them for contributing towards the nation's small savings, by keeping aside "kuch paise" after taking care of the domestic needs.
Pat for `entrepreneurs'
Lauding their "entrepreneurial skills" in running shops and even banks, he likened their savings to an oasis in the drought-hit State. The Governor had a special mention for the communication and leadership skills of the Velugu women who spoke earlier. The Collector, Shamsher Singh Rawat, translated the Governor's speech into Telugu. In all, SHG bank linkage worth Rs.27.85 lakhs to 32 groups and revolving fund worth Rs. 8.10 lakhs to 81 groups were distributed. The Endowments Minister, M. Satyanarayana Rao and the TTD trust board chairman, T.Subbirami Reddy recalled how Mr. Shinde, born in a poor dalit family, came up the political ladder to adorn the highest constitutional post of the State. The chief whip, N. Kirankumar Reddy, reiterated the Government's commitment to provide loans at three per cent rate to women. The TUDA chairman, B.Karunakar Reddy, TTD executive officer, Ajeya Kallam and MLAs M.Venkataramana (Tirupati) and G.Arunakumari (Chandragiri) were present.

Earlier, Mr. Shinde visited the TTD-run Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS) and Balaji Institute of Research and Rehabilitation for the Disabled (BIRRD) hospitals, accompanied by the respective directors, G. Subramanyam and G.Jagadish. He laid the foundation stone for the extension wing of the superspeciality block at SVIMS, estimated to cost Rs.2.7 crores. At BIRRD, he called on the physically challenged patients and distributed calipers.
In temple town
Mr. Shinde, who is on a maiden visit to the hill shrine of Lord Venkateswara, reached the temple town, this evening. On his arrival at the Padmavathi Guest House, he was accorded a warm reception by the T.T.D., district revenue and police officials. The Governor will stay overnight at Tirumala and shall participate in the "Abhishekam" of Lord - which is organised once in a week on Fridays.
