HYDERABAD, NOV. 25. The Government today announced a massive recruitment drive and funds infusion to overhaul the public health system of the State. This includes recruitment of 1,000 doctors, 400 assistant professors in medical colleges, 58 doctors in Indian medical systems and 1,200 nurses. Recruitments would be made according to MCI guidelines and a separate teaching cadre for medical college faculty formed before the next academic year. Special emphasis would be on recruitment of doctors in obstetrics, anaesthesia and paediatrics to reduce child and maternal mortality rates. Similarly, recruitment of nurses would be "location specific" in backward and tribal areas which would also be targeted by mobile medical units.
HUDCO loan
The Government would take a Rs. 165-crore HUDCO loan for upgrading the equipment and infrastructure in teaching hospitals before the next inspection by the Medical Council of India. An amount of Rs. 110 crores will be borrowed from NABARD to build and repair primary health centres in rural areas. Of this, Rs. 30 crores will be spent in tribal areas. Addressing the press after a review meeting of the Medical and Health Department by the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, here on Thursday, the Principal Secretary, I.V. Subba Rao, also announced a new medical college in Cuddapah. The `bhoomi pooja' for the building would be held on January 28 and admissions would begin by the 2006 academic year.
AIDS awareness
AIDS awareness will be taken to each habitation on World AIDS Day on December 1 by AIDS activists. The Government is also planning to involve the police and Transport Department to spread awareness about AIDS prevention among sex workers and truckers, who have been listed among the most vulnerable groups. As many as 1,000 condom-vending machines would be installed at strategic points. Mr. Subba Rao also announced that Rs. 2 crores had been released for operation of children with heart problems and the remaining Rs. 6 crores too would be released soon under a new GO. The newly appointed Director of Medical Education, G. Sai Gopal, was also present.
