Govt. urged to check elephant menace

By Our Staff Correspondent

MADIKERI, NOV. 25. The Kodagu district unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has decided to lock the offices of the Deputy Commissioner and the Conservator of Forests, if the State Government does not take steps to check the elephant menace in the district, the president of the district BJP unit, S.G. Medappa, said here on Thursday.

Speaking to presspersons, Mr. Medappa said that elephant menace had increased in the last few weeks in various parts of the district, but the Forest Department was a mute spectator. Elephants had gone berserk in Kodlipet, Besur, Maldare and other areas destroying hundreds of acres of coffee plantations and paddy fields.

A man was attacked by elephants at Kalur on Tuesday when presspersons were being conducted around the areas where crops had been damaged, he said.

Kerosene supply under the Public Distribution System in Kodagu had been cut from 812 kilolitres to 324 kilolitres in recent days, he alleged.

Remote villages and hamlets were still without electricity, Mr. Medappa said.

Deadline

The former MLA from Somwarpet M.P. Appachu Ranjan blamed the State Government for the problems of the farmers in Kodagu.

The Forest Department was not entertaining applications from farmers with regard to felling of trees for bona fide use, Mr. Appachu said, setting a 30-day deadline for the department to dispose of all pending applications.

If not, farmers would resort to cutting down trees on their own, he said.
