Naxal violence in Karimnagar, Cuddapah

By Our Staff Reporter

KARIMNAGAR, NOV. 25. In the first such incident of its kind during the truce period in the State, an exchange of fire took place between naxalites belonging to the CPI (Maoists) group and the police in the interior tribal hamlet of Rudrangi in Chandurthi mandal today evening.

There were no casualties from either side. The police have recovered an SBBL weapon from the scene of offence.

According to the Superintendent of Police, Rajiv Ratan, special police parties were conducting routine culvert checking on credible information that explosives were lying on the road. As soon as the police reached the Nakkapalli Thanda outskirts, some 10 naxalites of the Maoist group, clad in olive-green uniform, noticed the police and opened fire. The police without any option retaliated. Both sides fired 40 to 50 rounds for about five minutes. Later, the naxalites escaped into the forests. An SBBL weapon and empty cartridges were recovered from the spot. Seven abandoned motorcycles were also recovered. The SP said that naxalites should not visit any human habitations with weapons and they should leave weapons in the forests. He also appealed to them to stop resorting to extortion.

Congressmen beaten up

According to a report from Cuddapah, CPI (Maoist) Papaghni Dalam members clad in olive-green uniform severely beat up five Congress functionaries in a `praja durbar' conducted by them in Gurikanivandlapalle, a remote hamlet of Madhavaram village in Rayachoti mandal, in the early hours.

The Papaghni Dalam commander, Lakshmakka, and nine members summoned a Congress leader of Madhavaram, Raghupathi Naidu, his son, Nagamuneppa Naidu, and three other party activists — Narsappa Naidu alias Bhaskar Naidu, Jayasekhar Naidu and Chandra Naidu — to the `praja durbar' in the village, and beat them with sticks.
