Naidu holds talks with partymen on civic polls

HYDERABAD: With the municipal elections a few months away, the Telugu Desam Party has begun preparation for the electoral battle.

The TDP president, N. Chandrababu Naidu, held detailed discussions with party functionaries from Cuddapah, Kurnool, Nellore and Guntur districts on Thursday. The day-long exercise was aimed at gearing up party cadre for the elections.

Sources said the TDP chief asked the gathering to explain what went wrong with the party in the Assembly elections. He gave a free hand to them to air their views and suggest steps to improve party's chances in the civic polls. In a frank discussion, party workers said their views should be taken into consideration before elections.

Nod for official's deputation plea

Hyderabad: The Union Government has approved the request of the Principal Secretary, Finance, V. S. Sampath, for deputation to the Centre.

The State Government is likely to issue orders giving its clearance to the proposal. The names of several senior officers are being considered for the post likely to be vacated by Mr. Sampath.

Petrol filling station

raided, one killed

KURNOOL: Two unidentified persons raided a petrol filling station near Ulindakonda on the National Highway No. 7 and murdered one of the staff in the early hours of Thursday.

According to the Sub-inspector of Police, Daiva Prasad, the assailants, armed with iron rods, attacked the filling assistant, T. Madhu, and the watchman, Solomon Raju.

They took away Rs. 2,000 from Madhu and forced them to open an almirah asking for more money. Before leaving the place, they attacked the staff and hit them severely. Madhu, who received serious injuries, died.

The watchman received a head injury and fell unconscious. After recovery, he complained to the police. The Superintendent of Police, V.R.K. Mohan Rao, and the Deputy SP, Ammireddy, visited the place.

Jailed for graft

HYDERABAD: A former Assistant Labour Officer, Y.V. Appa Rao, has been sentenced to undergo one-year simple imprisonment and pay a fine of Rs. 1,000 as he was found guilty of corruption charges.

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) officials arrested Rao on December 24, 1994 while he was working as ALO of Circle-6 in Visakhapatnam on charge of accepting Rs. 300 as bribe from a watch shop owner for not booking cases against him, according to a press release.

Pension, gratuity withheld

HYDERABAD: The State Government has ordered withholding of pension and gratuity of the former Assistant Commercial Tax Officer, S. Neelakantam, following his conviction in a corruption case.

ACB officials arrested Neelakantam, who was working in Phoolbagh of Vizianagaram district in 1994, when he accepted Rs. 2,500 as bribe from a ghee shop owner, according to a press release.

The Special Judge for ACB Cases, Visakhapatnam, sentenced him to undergo one-year rigorous imprisonment and pay a fine of Rs. 1,000. His pension and gratuity were withheld in the wake of the judgment.

Tribal families desert village

ADILABAD: All the ten Gond tribal families, inhabiting Chalbadi village in Kerameri mandal, have reportedly deserted the village fearing questioning by the police in the wake of the Movvad public meeting of Communist Party of India (Maoist) naxalites held on October 31.

Already a father and his son, Korenga Govind Rao and Hanmanth Rao respectively, attempted suicide on November 22 allegedly fearing the police strong-arm tactics regarding their contribution to the naxalite meeting.

According to reports reaching here, the ten families have shifted to other villages in the area as they apprehend more visits by the Kerameri police. Govind Rao and his son had lent their tractor during the naxalite meeting and they were questioned on their links with naxalites. The reports also said that following the questioning of Hanmanth Rao by the police, a quarrel between the son and father ensued over the latter's role in organising the meeting.

Farmers stage protest

NIZAMABAD: Farmers of Yanampally village in Ditchpally mandal on Thursday staged a rasta roko on the National Highway-7 demanding payment of appropriate amount of compensation for their lands acquired by the Electricity Department for construction of 420 kv power station.

The farmers said the compensation offered by the Government was not adequate. They said they repeatedly represented their demand, but to no avail.

Ryots redeploy threshers

CUDDAPAH: The farmers of Gadikota panchayat in Lakkireddipalle constituency redeployed threshers on Thursday for harvesting their paddy crop amidst police protection daring the CPI (Maoist) threat against use of mechanised equipment.

The CPI (Maoist) threat led to harvest of paddy crop coming to a standstill for four days. Farmers held discussions with thresher owners expressing the police resolve to provide protection and got back the mechanised vehicles to the fields. Threshers were brought to Vangimalla, Gadikota and Peddur Kaspa villages in Veeraballe mandal and harvest of paddy crop resumed with about 60 armed reserve, APSP and civil police personnel staying guard, according to the police.

Honour for teachers

HYDERABAD: Three teachers of the State have won the first Innovative Teachers Asia Pacific Meet and will be now participating in the `Microsoft India Innovative Teachers Leadership Award Meet' to be held in Singapore on December 5.

The winning teachers are: Sunita Yadav of Government Boys High School, Mustaidpura, M. Narayana of Government High School, Kulsumpura, in Hyderabad and Vishwesvar of the Zilla Parishad High School, Vikarabad in Ranga Reddy district. Microsoft instituted the award.

It is to honour and reward exceptional primary and secondary school teachers who innovate teaching methods through integration of technology with classroom teaching and learning practices.

Rise in night temperature

Hyderabad: Night temperature registered a slight increase in the State on Thursday.

The lowest night temperature during the 24-hour period ending this morning was recorded by Hanamkonda and Hyderabad Airport at 14 degree Celsius, two points higher than the temperature recorded for the past thee days.

Weather was dry in the State. It will be dry on Friday also, according to a forecast by the Met office.

Minister's visit

NELLORE: The Minister for Municipal Administration, Koneru Ranga Rao, will arrive at Nellore on Friday, for a day's visit. He will inaugurate the e-Seva centre at Stonehousepet and water works at Mahboob Khan Park and address self-help groups.

Camp for diabetics

MADANAPALLE: In connection with the World Diabetes Day, the Rotary Club Madanapalle conducted a free diabetic treatment camp at Baby Welcome Home. Nearly 350 patients were examined.

Recognition for school

MADANAPALLE: Sri Chaitanya Children's Academy, Madanapalle, got recognition from the Regional Joint Director of Secondary Education for classes VI to X for the year 2004-2005 (English medium), principal, A.Sudhakar Raju said. This academy has one high school at Tirupati and Cuddapah too and a college at Tirupati.

Free ENT camp

NELLORE: A free mega ENT camp will be held at Nellore, on Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Town Hall. ENT surgeons, A. Venkata Ramana Reddy, Nellore and G.V.S. Rao, Hyderabad will take part. Apart from free tests and medicines, free audiometry and video endoscopy tests will also be provided.

Road repairs

Nellore: At a meeting of Zilla Parishad standing committee, which concluded on Wednesday, it was decided to undertake repairs to roads in all the 3 divisions of Nellore, Gudur and Kavali at a cost of Rs. 2 crores. A resolution was also adopted to sanction Rs. 2 lakhs for the ITDA building in Udayagiri.

SC panel's Nellore tour

NELLORE: The Committee on Welfare of Scheduled Castes will tour Nellore district for two days. The Committee members will arrive at Sullurpet on December 1 and receive representations from SC associations. The next day they will reach Nellore, meet the district officials and review the rule of reservation in various offices of Government, besides visiting SC hostels.

Madigas stage dharna

KURNOOL: The supporters of MRPS staged dharna at the Collectorate here urging the Government to formalise the categorisation of SCs through a Bill in Parliament. The leaders said Madigas would not get their due share in the system of combined quota for all SC communities.

Digvijay for Kurnool

KURNOOL: The AICC General Secretary, Digvijay Singh accompanied by the APCC president, K. Kesava Rao, will address a meeting of party workers at the DCC office here on Friday. The DCC president and MP, Kotla Jayasuryaprakasa Reddy, will receive Mr. Singh at Chagalamarri. The leaders will be taken in a procession from the outskirts of the city to the DCC office.

ITI exam

NELLORE: The principal, Govt. ITI (girls), Nellore, said those who want to appear for the supplementary examinations have to pay a fee of Rs. 30 before November 30 or with a penalty of Rs. 10 before December 10. The examinations will be held from January 21 to January 29.
