It's violation of ceasefire: Jana

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, NOV. 25. The Home Minister, K. Jana Reddy, has termed the Wednesday's firing by CPI (Maoist) cadre at Malleswaram village in Mahabubnagar district at P. Venkateswara Rao, son of a TDP Sarpanch, as a `ceasefire violation' and promised stringent action against offenders.

The Home Minister, however, said on Thursday that this would have no bearing on the talks.

"Talks are a different issue and it has no connection with the firing," he said, adding that the Government was leaving this kind of acts by extremists to people's judgment.

Talking to reporters, Mr. Jana Reddy said the extremists had resorted to the offence at a time when the talks between the Government and naxalites were on. Asked if the ban on CPI (Maoist) would be re-imposed in the light of the `violation', he replied: "the Government knows what to do, against whom and when keeping in mind the aspirations of people and circumstances."

Unfortunate: YSR

The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, took a serious note of the actions of Maoists in violating the ceasefire conditions.

Speaking to the media, he termed the exchange of fire in Karimnagar as well as the attack on a TDP worker in Mahbubnagar as unfortunate. The extremists were not expected to take the law into their hands and create obstacles for the ongoing talks, he said.

He said wherever there were such violations, the law would take its own course. However, he maintained that these incidents would not come in the way of the peace talks.

He reiterated the Government's stand that the all-party meet was not necessary to discuss the issue of the tenders for irrigation projects as demanded by the TDP. However, as the Communist parties demanded, he said there could be an all-party meet to discuss the utilisation of Krishna-Godavari waters in the State.
