GUNTUR, NOV. 25. Sixteen persons were arrested in the early hours of Thursday for performing and organising semi-nude dances on the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation's launch, `Shanti Shri,' in the Nagarjunasagar reservoir near Vijayapuri in Guntur district. The Nagarjunasagar Sub-Inspector of Police, B. Ramesh Babu, along with some constables, raided the launch past midnight after receiving information that indecent, semi-nude dances were being held on the launch owned by the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation. Five female dancers and nine male dancers along with two organisers from Hyderabad were arrested and brought to the police station.
Cases booked
The sub-inspector told The Hindu that cases were booked against all the 16 and they were granted bail. Ten others fled the scene during the raid, he added. According to the police, the launch was not permitted for use beyond sunset. Though the organisers claimed that they had permission for the same, but could not produce any evidence, he said. The APTDC lets out the launch to private parties sometimes, but it was dangerous to operate it in the deep waters in the dark without adequate safety measures, he added. Even with permission such indecent public performances were prohibited under the law, he added.
