THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, NOV. 25. The Government has made elaborate arrangements to provide medical assistance to the pilgrims at Sabarimala during the Mandala and Marakavilakku festivals, the Health Minister, K.K. Ramachandran, has said In an official release today, the Minister said that the medical facilities had been set up at the Sannidhanam, Appachimedu, Neelimala, Pamba and other areas. Oxygen parlours had been set up at 12 places along the route from Pamba to Sannidhanam. They would function 24 hours a day. Mobile clinics are functioning at Chalakkayam, Plappally, Nilackal and Attathodu. The Minister said that the Directorate of Medical Education had deputed 64 doctors, including 24 cardiologists and 37 general physicians, to Sabarimala. The Director of Health Services had sent 324 doctors besides the needed para medical staff. They work in batches.
More doctors posted
Mr. Ramachandran said that 40 doctors and paramedical staff were posted to the Pamba Government Hospital. Till Tuesday, 5,085 persons were treated at the hospital. Of them, four were with heart ailment. At the Sannidhanam, the services of eight doctors and 28 other staff were available and 6,500 persons were treated there. The facility had equipment needed for treatment of heart problems. Cardiology centres functioned at Appachimedu and Neelimala also.
Emergency service
He said that arrangements had been made at the Kottayam Medical College to attend to any emergency. The peripheral hospitals too had been equipped to attend to medical needs of the pilgrims. He said that periodic review of the functioning of the Health Department at Sabarimala was being done. All had been directed to work in coordination with the other departments of Government, the Dewaswom Board, voluntary agencies and devotees. The quality of food and drinking water distributed at Sabarimala was being checked constantly.
