VIJAYAWADA, NOV. 25. Doctors of Government and private hospitals in the city observed a token strike on Thursday, in protest against "increasing attacks on hospitals and their managements". Led by members of the Bezwada Medical Association, an affiliated wing of the Indian Medical Association, the doctors took out a rally from the IMA hall to the office of the Superintendent of Police and submitted a memorandum to the SP demanding immediate steps to curb the attacks. Speaking to The Hindu , the president of the BMA, P. Venkateswarlu, said attacks by "unruly mobs" on hospitals in the event of the death of a patient due to ailments had become the order of the day. "The culprits should be put behind the bars," he demanded adding that if the relatives of the patient had any grievance, they should move the court.
Best efforts failed
Referring to the attack on a private hospital in the city on Monday by relatives of a student who died while undergoing treatment there, the IMA members in the memorandum said the patient was brought to the hospital in a critical condition at 9.45 p.m. Despite the best medical care, he failed to respond to the treatment and died after a few hours.
A warning too
The executive body of the IMA met immediately after the incident along with its sister organisations like the Andhra Pradesh Nursing Home Associations (APNA) and decided to observe a day's bandh.
