CHENNAI, NOV. 25. The Chennai-Thiruvananthapuram Mail and the Chennai-Mangalore Mail will be speeded up from Sunday. They will be operated at 110 km per hour, up from 105 kmph now, thanks to strengthening of 580 km of track in the Chennai-Shoranur section over four years at a cost of Rs. 305 crores. Apart from replacement of wooden sleepers with concrete sleepers, the track on many stretches was renewed. The Commissioner of Railway Safety, who inspected the improved track, has certified operation of services at 110 kmph. According to officials, the trains will gain a minimum of 20 minutes in running time. The existing timings will not be changed, but the reduction in running time will help to improve punctuality. In due course, other trains running in the Chennai-Shoranur and Chennai-Jolarpettai sections will be speeded up. These include the Kovai Express, the Inter-City Express to Coimbatore, the Nilgiris Express, the Brindavan Express and the Bangalore Mail. The Minister of State for Railways, R.Velu, will flag off the speeded up Thiruvananthapuram Mail and Mangalore Mail at Chennai Central on Sunday.
