Mumbai in command

MUMBAI, NOV. 25. The experience of Amol Muzumdar (111, 197b, 15x4) and the exuberance of young Vinit Indulkar (111 retd. hurt, 187b, 16x4) came to the fore as defending champion Mumbai ran up a commanding 305 for three against Andhra on the opening day of its four-day Ranji Trophy Elite-A contest at the Wankhede Stadium here on Thursday.

It was a typical innings from Muzumdar — calm yet majestic — while Indulkar caught the eye for his confident strokeplay. Having languished in the reserves for nearly two years, the 20-year-old Indulkar finally got a look-in this season.

After completing his maiden first class century, Indulkar was forced to retire owing to cramps. This was just after tea. But his partnership of 162 for the third-wicket with Muzumdar helped the home team recover from 49 for two. It was Muzumdar's 14th century in the National championship.

Jadeja rescues Delhi

At the Jamia Millia ground in Delhi, mediumpacer Harvinder Singh's triple blow brought Delhi to its knees before Ajay Jadeja (74 batting) helped the host stagger to 179 for six at stumps against Railways in a Elite-A clash.

Reduced to 30 for five midway through the first session, Delhi recovered through two half-century partnerships involving Jadeja, who began the repair work with Varun Kumar (30) in a 56-run sixth-wicket stand and kept it going in the company of Sarandeep Singh (31 batting). The unbroken seventh-wicket stand is already worth 93.

Run feast

In Bangalore, openers Robin Uthappa (162) and Barrington Rowland (169 n.o.) uncorked a run feast and guided Karnataka to 357 for one against Madhya Pradesh in an Elite-A face-off at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. The visiting skipper, Amay Khurasiya, opted to bowl on a pitch which was expected to aid seam and watched in dismay, as his decision backfired. Uthappa and Barrington shared a 324-run partnership.

Anirudh hits century

Left-hander Anirudh Singh century (103, 183b, 15x4) enabled host Hyderabad make 231 against Maharashtra in their Elite-B match at the Gymkhana grounds. In reply, the visitor was four without loss at stumps.
