Sheep die

ERODE NOV. 25. Twelve sheep died in Kangeyam due to blue tongue disease, the secretary of the Farmers' Federation of Tamil Nadu, C. Nallasamy, said today. Doctors of the Veterinary Department did not confirm the death of the sheep, but said that blue tongue disease was common during this season. Sufficient drugs were available in all veterinary hospitals, they said.

Body found

SALEM NOV. 25. The body of an unidentified youth was found in a canal in Fairlands here today. According to police sources, the body was highly decomposed. Further investigation is on.

Grievances day

Drowned

ERODE NOV. 25. A 50-year-old woman drowned in the PAP canal on Tuesday. According to the police, Valliammal, wife of Ponnusamy of Udumalpet, had come to Govindanagar near Dharapuram on Tuesday. She was washing clothes in the canal when she drowned. Her body was recovered by the Dharapuram police.

Fire accidents

ERODE NOV. 25. Cotton bales worth Rs. 40,000 were destroyed in a fire accident in the Reddivalasu Spinning Mill near Vellakoil on Tuesday night. The Vellakoil police registered a case.

In another fire accident on Tuesday night at Anjure in Erode taluk, nine thatched huts were damaged. The fire had spread from a thatched hut erected by some agricultural labourers. Personnel from the Fire and Rescue Services Department put out the fire.

Meeting

PUDUKOTTAI NOV.25 . The meeting of the comprehensive forest management coordination committee of the Tamil Nadu Afforestation Programme of Pudukottai district was held here on Wednesday.

The Divisional Forest Officer, A. V. Venkatachalam, the president of the village forest committees, and top officials of forest and other departments participated in the meeting.

The Collector, Jatindranath Swain, who presided, explained the welfare programmes being implemented by the Forest Department including the setting up of percolation ponds at Malampatti, Kollupatti, Eachampatti, Pilavanarkudi, Karugampatti Manaiyadipatti, Amburpatti, Kulathur Kayakesanthanpatti.

Communal Harmony Day

Thanjavur Nov.25 . The Collector, J. Radhakrishnan, today called for social integration among people to keep our country united.

Speaking at the Communal Harmony Day held at Kamala Subramanyam Higher Secondary School here, he said that religious integration was not enough. He stressed the need to fight terrorism, fundamentalism and extremism to make our country a strong one.

P. Ramaraj, Chief Education Officer, spoke.

The Collector distributed prizes to those who participated in essay and elocution competitions on communal harmony and national integration. Earlier, prayers of all faiths were rendered. Hema, Principal of the school, John Irudayaraj, Principal of St.Antony's Higher Secondary School, participated in the function.

Extended

Thanjavur Nov. 25 . Fifty per cent concession being given to publications of Saraswathi Mahal Library in connection with 227th birthday celebrations of the Maratta King Serfoji II, architect of the library, will continue till December 31, says the Collector, J. Radhakrishnan, who is also the director of the library, in a press release here today.

Previously, it was decided to give this concession till November 30 only.

Seminar

Thanjavur Nov.25 . The Collector, J. Radhakrishnan, has urged veterinary doctors to take inventions in the field of animal husbandry to the rural people.

Presiding over a technical seminar for veterinary doctors of Thanjavur and Pudukottai districts here today, he said that such seminars should be held in villages, and the importance of rearing livestock should be made known to them. He asked them to make Thanjavur equal to Erode and Salem districts in milk production.

Punniyamurthy from Extension Centre of Tamil Nadu Veterinary University, spoke. The Joint Director of Animal Husbandry, Abbas, the Deputy Directors, Vijayasundaram and Mohandoss, the Assistant Directors, Ramalingam, Durairaj, Selvaraj and Chokkalingam, participated in the meeting. Kannan, veterinary doctor from Budalur, welcomed the gathering.

Mettur level

Tiruchi Nov. 25. The water level at the Mettur reservoir stood at 102.92 feet today. The inflow was 4,811 cusecs and the discharge 5,196 cusecs.

TASMAC employee stabbed to death

NAGERCOIL Nov. 25 . A 47-year-old employee of the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation was stabbed to death by his relative under the Vadaserry police limits here on Wednesday.

According to the police, K. Krishnan of Vakaiyadi North Street near here was having an illicit affair with Vijayakumari (39), wife of his relative Sachithanandan, a hotel employee of Vadaserry.

On Wednesday, Sachithananda saw his wife going with Krishnan on Ramavarmapuram New Street. So, enraged over this, he stabbed Krishnan and escaped. Krishnan was rushed to the Asaripallam Government Medical College Hospital where he succumbed to injuries.

The police have registered a case and are investigating.

Lottery tickets seized

Sources said Basheer (34), who was found selling lotteries, was arrested and remanded under the Sections 5 & 7 of the Lottery Regulation Act.

Peace boat yatra

NAGERCOIL Nov. 25 . The Peace Forum, headed by the former Supreme Court Judge, V. R. Krishna Iyer, will organise a `peace boat yatra' from Kanyakumari to Kasarcode in Kerala to ensure peace and communal harmony, said the Director of Navajothi, Sr.Elsi.

Speaking to The Hindu , she said playback singer Jesudhas would inaugurate the 12-day yatra at Kanyakumari on December 10.

Training programme for police

Tuticorin Nov. 25 . A three-day multi-media training programme for the `Friends of Police' (FoP) and police personnel began here on Wednesday.

The DSP (Rural), P. Moorthy, nodal officer of the training programme, told The Hindu that the training programme was aimed at bringing about an attitudinal change and improving the community policing techniques among the FoP and police personnel.

He said that about 200 FoPs, five DSP/ASPs, 25 Inspectors, 25 Sub-Inspectors and 30 constables were participating in the programme. ``About 30 per cent of the participants, who have enrolled for the programme, were women'', he added.

Six injured as car hits patients

SALEM NOV. 25 . Six persons, four patients and two hospital employees, were seriously injured when a car dashed against a gate of the Government Medical College Hospital here today.

The police said a doctor's car had developed a snag. He summoned a mechanic who attempted to drive it. But the vehicle lost control, dashed against one of the gates in the hospital and hit against those who came to the hospital for treatment.

The injured patients were Akilandeshwari (50), Krishnan, Ezhumalai and Raju. The other two, Rajendran and Periyasamy, were hospital employees. All of them were being treated in the hospital, and two were said to be in a critical condition.

Open varsity admission

CHENNAI NOV. 24. The Tamil Nadu Open University (TNOU) will conduct an entrance examination on January 9, 2005, for its newly- introduced B.Ed programme.

Road works cleared

NEW DELHI NOV. 25 . The Union Minister for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways, T. R. Baalu, has approved two proposals for development of roads in Pondicherry.

One relates to widening of National Highway 45A, through Pondicherry and carries about 15,000 passenger car units a day.

The Minister has sanctioned Rs. 232.63 lakhs to provide a paved shoulder of 1.5 metres from km 46/5 to 54/18 (7.68 km) of the Pondicherry-Cuddalore road on NH 45A.

Under the second proposal, widening of the two-lane East Coast Road to four-lane from km 139/00 to km 141/24 has been approved. The work, costing Rs. 257 lakhs, will be taken up under Central Road Fund works for Pondicherry for 2004-05.

New AIBA Vice-Chairman

NEW DELHI NOV. 25. The Madras High Court Advocates Association president, S. Prabhakaran, has been appointed Vice-Chairman of the All India Bar Association (AIBA).

The AIBA Chairman, Adish C. Aggarwala, announced this in a statement here.

Mr. Prabhakaran has urged the Union Law Minister to fill the vacancies in the Madras High Court. Of the total sanctioned strength of 49 judges, including in the Madurai Bench, there were 22 vacancies, he said.

AIDWA plea against illicit liquor

CHENNAI NOV.25. The State unit of the All India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA) today urged the Government to intensify the drive against the sale of illicit liquor.

The president, Sudha Sundararaman, and the general secretary, U.Vasuki, said in a statement here that some members of a self-help group were injured in a fire while they attempted to apprehend bootleggers at the Vayalur panchayat in Kancheepuram district on November 17. Two of them, who sustained grievous injuries, had been undergoing treatment at the Kilpauk Government Hospital.

The AIDWA functionaries urged the Government to provide relief to the injured.

Construction workers protest

CHENNAI NOV.25. Construction workers owing allegiance to the Tamil Nadu Jananayaka Kattumana Thozhilalar Sangam staged a demonstration in front of the office of the construction labour welfare board here today.

The sangam, in a release, demanded that the State Government deduct two per cent of the construction cost for the welfare fund, so that a monthly pension at Rs.1,000 could be given to eligible beneficiaries. Now, the Government deducted only 0.30 per cent towards the fund, the sangam claimed.

The protesters, including a large number of women, also highlighted the demand for extending housing, medical and Employees State Insurance facilities to them.

Teachers take out procession

CHENNAI NOV. 25 . Members of the Tamil Nadu Government Higher Secondary Computer Faculty Welfare Association took out a procession in the city today, urging the Government to bring the teachers under its control.

They said that though they were responsible for the high pass percentage in schools for the past five years, their monthly pay was low, ranged from Rs. 750 to Rs.1,500. Some of the teachers could not get even this, as they were cheated by the contractors who hired them, or were given cheques that bounced.
