Envoy visits special school

NEW DELHI NOV.25 . The Canadian High Commissioner, Lucie Edwards, today inaugurated two new projects of Tamana Association -- a non-profit organisation working in the field of educational and vocational training of children with autism -- at the School of Hope here.

The School of Hope -- which is meant for children with autistic and multiple disabilities -- has started World Health Organisation's training course for teachers of South Asian countries working with the intellectually challenged.

On the occasion, Ms. Edwards was shown the different types of training programmes for the students. The students presented a fashion show and sang a song.

Haj arrangements reviewed

NEW DELHI NOV. 25. The Delhi Development Minister, Raj Kumar Chauhan, today reviewed the arrangements for the Haj pilgrims while presiding over a meeting at the Delhi Secretariat here. Mr. Chauhan instructed the officers of the Revenue Department to ensure effective coordination and proper discharge of their responsibilities. "Since lakhs of devotees congregate in the Capital before catching their flights to Haj, the officers should be sensitive about the arrangements," added Mr. Chauhan.

The Delhi Government has provided an amount of Rs.50 lakhs to the Haj Committee for making arrangements like erection of tents, installation of adequate number of toilets, uninterrupted supply of electricity, proper sanitation, potable water and medical facilities at the Haj camps.

The Chairman of Delhi Haj Committee, Abdul Sami Salmani, and senior officers of the Delhi Jal Board, Municipal Corporation of Delhi, Delhi Fire Services, Delhi Police, Delhi Red Cross Society and Northern Railway were also present on the occasion.

Barrier-free building

NEW DELHI NOV. 25. Setting an example for planners, policy makers and other stakeholders working to promote the rights of persons with disabilities, the Rehabilitation Council of India moved into its new building which is fully barrier-free earlier this week. Built on the principles of universal design, the building is accessible to all persons with disabilities including the visually impaired and the hearing impaired.

A noteworthy feature of the building design is that it is totally barrier free for persons with disabilities and has provisions for ramps with handrails and grabbers, lifts with auditory and Braille signals, barrier-free toilets, low stairs, spacious corridors and lobby for free movement of wheelchairs besides appropriate signages.

New DJA office-bearers

NEW DELHI NOV. 25. In the biennial elections of the Delhi Journalists Association (DJA), Manohar Singh of "UNI-Varta" and Manoj Verma of "India Today" were elected president and general secretary respectively.

The other elected office-bearers included Ajay Kaul of "PTI", Ashok Kinkar of "Hindustan", Pramod Kumar Singh of "The Pioneer" and Anil Attri of "Young Indian" -- -- all vice-presidents; Usha Pahwa of "Punjab Kesari", Narendra Bhandari of "Jansatta" and Praveen Kumar Singh of "Hard News" -- secretaries; and Pradeep Sangam of Hindustan -- treasurer.

`Restructure teacher education'

NEW DELHI, NOV. 25. Calling upon institutions involved with teacher education to "harness the potential of new communication technologies for promoting quality of teacher education'', the chairperson of the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), Shardindu, stressed the need to restructure teacher education to be in tune with the norms and standards laid down by the NCTE. Dr.Shardindu was speaking at the meet of Colleges of Teacher Education (CTEs) and Institutes of Advanced Study in Education (IASEs) held in the Capital this past Monday and Tuesday. Aimed at orienting teacher educators in the implementation of centrally sponsored scheme of education as per the National Education Policy of 1986- 87, faculty members from various institutions participated, besides a number of experts from universities such as IGNOU, Jamia Milia Islamia and DU.
