K. Vasudev Aatre, former Adviser to the Ministry of Defence, inaugurating the symposium on acoustics in Mysore on Thursday. K. Balaveera Reddy, Vice-Chancellor of the Visvesvaraya Technological University, B.V.A. Rao, president, Acoustical Society of India, M.H. Dahananyaja, Director, Technical, JSS Mahavidyapeetha, and B.G. Sangameshwar, chairman, National Symposium on Acoustics 2004, are seen.
MYSORE, NOV. 25. Former Scientific Adviser to the Defence Minister Vasudev K. Aatre today emphasised the importance of a linkage between academia, research and development agencies and industries if India had to achieve excellence in product technology.
Obstacles
Inaugurating a three-day national symposium on acoustics here, Dr. Aatre said the absence of such linkages was creating obstacles in the country's path to progress. He said educational institutions should house research and development facilities while national laboratories such as the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) should not work in isolation.
Product technology
Identifying product technology as an important vehicle in achieving progress, Dr. Aatre said India's dreams would become nightmare if it did not make rapid strides in product technology.
Emphasis
He said that if product technology was to contribute to national wealth, adequate emphasis was to be laid on the concept of `import, imitate, innovate and invent.' "But India has adopted only import and imitation,'' he added. "Unfortunately, inventions are confined to laboratories in most instances. Industries should realise that they can no longer afford to depend on imports. They should encourage home-grown technology and products," he said.
Powerful economy
The country could realise the dreams of the President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, if it was driven on the strength of its knowledge power. On the importance of a powerful economy, he cited the example of the United States.
Superpower
"The U.S. has emerged as a superpower because of its military prowess, which is dependent on its economic power,'' he said. The Vice-Chancellor of Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), K. Balaveera Reddy; the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Mysore, Sashidhar Prasad; the Principal of SJCE, B.G. Sangameshwara; and the Executive Director of JSS Mahavidyapeetha, B.N. Betkerur, were present.
Delegates
A total of 500 delegates from all over the country will attend the seminar organised by Acoustics Society of India, Sri Jayachamarendra College of Engineering (SJCE), Mysore, and the JSS Institute of Speech and Hearing, Mysore. The seminar is being sponsored by Madras Regional India Chapter of Acoustical Society of America, the International Commission on Acoustics, and the All India Institute of Speech and Hearing (AIISH).
