MYSORE, NOV. 25. The artistic brilliance of handicrafts of Andhra Pradesh, including brassware, woodcarvings and Kalamkari paintings, came alive here today at an exhibition organised by self-help groups and the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts). The exhibition is being held at the Institution of Engineers and will be open to the public till December 5. It was inaugurated by the Mayor, Dakshina Murthy. Syed Fazil Ali, Secretary, Handicrafts Artisans' Welfare Association, said apart from the conventional and traditional artefacts, the people of Mysore would also be exposed to Cheriyal paintings, artistic leather ware, cotton, jute and printed durries, crochet laces, terracotta, gagracholi, leather puppets, lamp shades, stone-studded bangles, pearls and imitation jewellery, toys and dolls, Kondapalli toys, and black metal among others. A salient feature of the exhibition is the demonstration of select crafts by members of self-help groups, who will chisel them out. The objective of the exhibition-cum-sale and demonstration of artefacts is to popularise products developed by self-help groups under various craft clusters in Andhra Pradesh under the Babasaheb Ambedkar Hastashilpa Vikas Yojana. Mr. Ali said artisans of Andhra Pradesh had formed an association for their development through services such as marketing, design and technical inputs so as to strengthen production. The association had training programmes for need-based craft projects, revival of languishing crafts and would help implement schemes of the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), DRDA and other agencies.
