MYSORE, NOV. 25. The Mysore City Corporation will launch a drive against unauthorised advertisement hoardings here on Friday. A decision in this regard was taken at a meeting of the corporation council.
Complaints
Responding to the complaints by corporators against the unauthorised hoardings, the Mayor, Dakshina Murthy, directed the corporation Commissioner, A.B. Ibrahim, to launch the drive. Many hoardings had been put up in the city without the permission of the corporation. Some hoardings had been put up in an erratic manner causing traffic hazards. The licence period of a number of hoardings had ended long ago. A few contractors, who had obtained licence for a few hoardings, had put up a large number of them in violation of rules, the meeting observed.
Revenue loss
The corporation was losing revenue amounting to lakhs of rupees because of unauthorised hoardings, the corporators noted.
Uproarious scenes
Earlier, the meeting witnessed uproarious scenes when Vasudev, independent corporator, alleged that some corporators had pressured the Commissioner not to go ahead with his move to remove unauthorised hoardings some time ago. The Congress corporators urged Mr. Vasudev to announce the names of such corporators. However, Mr. Dakshina Murthy told the Commissioner not to give into any pressure during the drive. Based on the recommendations of the Municipal Administration Directorate, the corporation proposed to build 122 bus shelters in the city through private participation. While the Traffic Police had identified 15 spots for the construction of bus shelters, the KSRTC had identified 107 spots for the purpose, the meeting was told.
Bus shelters
Mr. Dakshina Murthy appealed to the corporators to suggest spots in their respective wards to build bus shelters. The corporation would try to accommodate a few more in a report to be sent to the Directorate in the next 15 days, he said. Mr. Dakshina Murthy, however, said that the hi-tech bus shelters constructed in parts of the city a few months ago were not beneficial to the people.
Parks
Meanwhile, the Mayor said the Deputy Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah, had sanctioned Rs. 1 crore for the renovation and upkeep of 217 parks in the city. Officials led by him would inspect the parks from December 1, he added.
