Tibetan women taking out a procession to mark International Day for elimination of violence against women, in Mysore on Thursday.
MYSORE, NOV. 25 . Women from Tibetan settlement camps at Bylakuppe and Hunsur near here took out a procession in the city today to mark the International Day for elimination of violence against women. After a brief function at the Town Hall, members of the Regional Tibetan Women's Association marched through K.R. Circle, D. Devaraj Urs Road, Narayan Shastri Road, Irwin Road and Ashoka Road. In a statement, the members expressed concern over discrimination against women in Tibet by the Chinese Government. Tibetan women faced discrimination in education and occupation. Discrimination against women was not only injustice but also an obstacle to equality, development and peace. Contending that prostitution had spread in the Tibet Autonomous Region since the early 1990s under the Chinese rule, the members quoted Tibet Information Network (TIN) and said Tibetans in rural areas were poor and because of their low-level of education, they found it difficult to get jobs. This discrepancy appeared to have forced Tibetan women into prostitution. The members urged the United Nations to pressure the Chinese Government to stop discrimination against Tibetan women, torture, denial of privileges to them, and to provide the rights to education and employment. They sent a memorandum to the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in this regard.
