CHENNAI, NOV. 25 . The use of "biological agents" in rheumatology treatment will be in focus at the 20th annual conference of the Indian Rheumatology Association, IRACON-2004, here between November 26 and 28. Biological agents have been used over the last couple of years and proved effective, according to V. Krishnamurthy, organising secretary. While these agents use antibodies to attack the cytokines which produce swelling or pain, there are questions whether they will reduce the antibodies in the system and lead to an impaired defence mechanism, Dr. Krishnamurthy told mediapersons today. In addition, the imported drugs were prohibitively expensive. This and other issues relating to the biological agents, will be discussed.
