CHENNAI, NOV. 25. The Thandurai Pattabiram Consumer Council has launched a programme to create awareness on the benefits of iodine-rich salt. The programme, which covers Putlur and neighbouring villages in Tiruvallur district, had council members inspecting shops to reach out to public about the purchase of salt packets with a symbol of the `smiling sun' on it, to denote the presence of iodine. The residents were told how of learnt to preserve the salt by not exposing to the sun and heat while cooking.
