CHENNAI, NOV. 25. The Chennai Corporation today ratified award of a Rs.3.2 crores contract for completion of the subway at Harrington Road, Chetpet. The subway has been incomplete for nearly two years now. The award is 30 per cent more than the estimate drawn up by the civic agency. The contract includes construction of approach roads and a cycle track. Once constructed, the subway is expected to ease traffic flow in Nungambakkam, Choolaimedu, Nelson Manickam Road and adjoining areas.
Fourth call
This is the fourth time the civic agency has called for tenders for the project. Previously, there were no takers for the project as it required huge quantities of concrete and steel and the prices of both components have been fluctuating heavily. The government schedule of rates was not in accordance with the market rate, according to knowledgeable sources. The Ward 72 councillor, S. Bhavanishankar (AIADMK) said the project had been pending forlong and questioned whether the project would be fourth time lucky. The Corporation Commissioner, M.P. Vijayakumar, promised the council that the construction of the remaining portions of the subway would be taken up after State Government approval. Construction is expected to take at least a year. In other developments, the Corporation passed 35 resolutions and three councillors of the Bharatiya Janata Party in the Chennai Corporation Council staged a walkout from today's meeting to protest the arrest of the Kanchi Acharya, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi.
