National yoga championship opens

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, NOV. 25. A four-day yoga national championship got under way at the Nehru Indoor Stadium today.

At least 700 participants, aged 8 to 25, from 23 states assembled at the stadium for the 29th National Yoga Championship organised by the Tamil Nadu Yogasana Association and the Yoga Federation of India.

Cultural programmes and yoga demonstrations marked the inaugural ceremony. The demonstration, hosted by the association, featured 20 students of different age groups, led by G. Radhakrishnan, who has won gold medals twice in the World Yoga Championship. The team demonstrated advanced asanas such as `mayurasana' or the peacock pose and the locust pose.

The `yogic dance' by a seven-member team, blending both dance and yoga, received warm applause

The Sports and Youth Welfare Minister, Inbathamilan, said the Government planned to appoint district-level trainers and more teachers in yoga schools to make Tamil Nadu the leading State in yoga.

The vice-president of the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu, W.I. Davaram, called on students to make use of the increased funds sanctioned by the State Government for national level sports events held in Chennai.

The president of the yoga federation, K.C. Sharma, appealed to the Minister to get recognition for the Tamil Nadu Yogasana Association from State Government and Tamil Nadu Indian Olympic Association. He wanted yoga to be included as a sport in the mainstream as it was one of the few Indian disciplines. He also urged the Government to provide concessional accommodation and other facilities for participants in such events.
