MANGALORE, NOV. 25. About 500 children from different schools today participated in a rally organised as part of "Pollution Control Week" by the Transport Department here. The children carried placards and banners highlighting the harmful effects of the gases emitted by automobiles. The rallyists later distributed stickers to motorists with information about the harmful effects of pollution. Giving details about the drive undertaken by the Transport Department, the Regional Transport Officer, Giridhar, told The Hindu that there were about 1.85 lakh vehicles in Mangalore and there had been a 25 per cent increase every year in the light motor vehicle segment, while in the two-wheeler segment, the increase was 35 to 40 per cent a year. Transport vehicles were recording an increase of 10 per cent a year.
Violations
Mr. Giridhar said that the RTO was taking violations of emission rules seriously and imposing hefty fines starting from Rs. 500. He said that till date, 891 vehicles of all classes had been booked under the Pollution Control Act in the last quarter.
Explaining a special brochure brought out on this occasion by the Transport Department, Mr. Giridhar said that carbon dioxide, hydrocarbons, oxides of nitrogen, sulphur dioxide and suspended particulate matter harmed the eyes and the brain, pregnant women and the foetus in the womb.
