UDUPI, NOV. 25. Mahabaleshwar Rao, scholar, on Thursday said that basic sciences should be given importance. He was speaking at the valedictory of the 12th Children's Science Conference organised by the Karnataka Rajya Vignana Parishath, here. Prof. Rao said that there was now a craze for information technology (IT) and biotechnology courses. This was because students thought that passing the IT and biotechnology courses would give them a cushy future in foreign countries. But it was the basic science courses that were at the receiving end due to this perception The teams selected for the State-level competitions from the City Senior Division category are: Sudip Aithal from Manipal Junior College for "Fluoride content in water;" Akshay Acharya from Vidyodaya Public School, Udupi, for "Analysis of well water;" and Manoj M. from Manipal Junior College for "Wastewater management." Rural Senior Division: Glen from St. Mary's Junior College, Shirva; Sudarshan from Government Junior College, Hebri; and Supreet Shetty from K.S.P. Memorial Government High School, Pervaje. City Junior Division: Samhita Bhat of Vidyodaya Public School, Udupi, and Ajeya from Manipal Junior College.
